Cold Seaturtles

There was a story the other day in the newspaper about a sea turtle that had been found right off of the coast of cape cod. The turtle was alive but nearly frozen. A team of volunteers rescued the turtle and shipped it to a prestigious aquarium where it is getting the best treatment and ha… Continue

Kanyankoli

There is a boy named Kanyankoli that I love so much, he is a tall and thin boy with a serious face who used to fight more than he liked to smile. One day he came in to, "the office where we were giving medicine because he had just been beaten in the side and arm and was needing medicine and a massage, (in Uganda you help cure breaks, sprains, anything like that by securely massaging the area which is a bit difficult to me when a kid is in a lot of pain.) Although he was tall for his age I could… Continue

It is confusing. I always seem to fall in love with the street kids that no one else would take. The rough ones who grab your arm and pull you along instead of holding it, can't stop themselves from fighting with the other kids and taking drugs, and are constantly moody. If you were to ask… Continue

Cuties

Man, I don't think there are words to describe how much I love these kids! This is the room that we are renting for 10 of the kids to sleep and live in at night that we use as our "office" during the day to clean their cuts in and distribute clothing or food from and some of the kids that are staying in it (they don't look like street kids now do they?!). It is so amazing to already see a change in these kids. They take a lot less drugs than they used. When we were first administering medicine w… Continue

Fight

Ezekiel 16:49 "Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.” (Sound familiar?)

"God is not fair but I think He is just." -Former street child who has been off of the streets for one year

We were going to meet the, "Gulu Homeboys" a group of older street kids different than our usual young and rowdy bunch in Kisenyi . To get to the boys we pass down a crowded and sooty canal. Today though was diff… Continue

Yesterday was my birthday!

I think that I got worms for this shot. We were going to visit the street boys running from the war in Gulu when Martin came to me and told me that he wanted me to get a photo of where the boys sleep and to follow him. He steps right off of the black soot area that we usually meet on into this jungly banana tree area, I follow after him and fall right up to my knee in nasty sewage, as I yanked myself out I lost my left shoe far in the muck in the process. I actually got off far better than Chris… Continue

Street Kids

As given to me by my father from one of the second century church fathers (Diognetus 10) "Happiness is not a matter of lording it over one's neighbors, or desiring to have more than weaker men, or possessing wealth and using force against one's inferiors [things we in the west do all too often at the expense of the poor]. No one is able to imitate God in these matters; on the contrary, these things are contrary to his greatness. But whoever takes upon himself his neighbor's burden, whoever wishe… Continue

Today and Wasswa

Today was a wonderful day, I was woken up by six kids clambering into my bunk to cuddle this morning. I spent the morning in a beautiful village with them, had millet porridge and bread for breakfast (my favorite), took a bodaboda ride (motorcycle ride) through the lush green village for about 15 minutes to sit by a breezy window in a matatu next to a dear friend and brother of mine Bbosa, to take another Boda ride to the boys house where I met a friend of mine Andrew who started the street kid… Continue

Wonderful Updates

There is a quote from a book by IJM that talks about brining young girls out and into brothels and it goes something like this, "when you walk into a brothel holding the hand of a little girl the evil can almost tear you down but when you walk out of a brothel freeing the hand of a little girl the glory of God that is revealed can almost bow you over..." When it comes to street children it is exactly the same. I know what it feels like to hold the hand of a street child, take them to the hospita… Continue

A wonderful day

I had THE most amazing day yesterday, I am certain it was one of the best days in my entire life. We took Patrick off of the street yesterday! The handsom boy from last posts pictures. We were looking for him and found him sitting on a pile of trash and inhaling gas from a bottle. When we told him we were going to take him off the street, he looked at us, got an enormous smile, jumped up, threw down his bottle with gusto and followed us. It was so sad because we bought all of his clothing at thi… Continue

MORE KIDS OFF THE STREET

Today is less than a week after that last post and today and yesterday have been filled with me spending time with a precious 8 year old street boy who has been living on the streets for the last two years. This time though he is never going back. We are taking him to Ssenge today and tomorrow we are taking three more boys that we have identified as well (Ronald, Ivan, and Henry) three amazing and sweet boys. I am so excited and happy. Today we are transitioning and spending time with Wasswa, th… Continue

Fulfilled, angry, and a lil confused

Often I feel heartbroken about what street kids go through, but every once in a while it makes me feel downright angry. Yesterday, after giving medicine and food to a group of about 60 street kids some of the group was leaving when we were approached by the headmistress and a teacher from the school that is right next to where we feed the kids (the school is on holiday). They both angrily told us that next time they were calling local authorities to punish us for disturbing the area because we w… Continue

Redemption Stories

"Being a street kid you feel forgotten by everyone, even God. You feel like no one loves you."

There is a picture by my desk of a lean, grinning young man with sparkling brown eyes and long eyelashes. He is 16 years old. I love him sooooo much.

Yesterday, I saw him enter the house looking completely crestfallen. I asked him what was the matter and he told me that he had been walking around that day in the ghetto and had come across some street kids. Seeing those kids had made him so sad. Whe… Continue

Slightly graphic pictures

Yesterday was a pretty hard day for so many reasons but the hardest part was at our street children outreach where there were way too many starving kids who even though I had bought a lot of bread, I hadn't brought enough of, and taking care of SO MANY horrible wounds from fights, dog bites, and from getting punctured while collecting scrap metal (a whole day of collecting brings in about 30 cents) that started small and then festered as they lived on and among trash heaps and filthy environment… Continue
